Unhealthy Condiments

I previously posted the top 5 healthy condiments and as promised here are the worst.  Keep in mind even though you may use small amounts of these condiments they can still be adding to your belly fat.  Try to limit these and use more of the healthy condiments in their place.

Mayo--Mayonnaise usually contains processed refined soybean oil as its main ingredient.  This is not a healthy oil and causes inflammation.  It also upsets your omega 3 and omega 6 balance giving you excess omega 6.  The same goes for tartar sauce.  A healthier choice would be mayo made with 100% olive oil instead of soybean oil.

Ketchup--This is usually made with a lot of sugar and high fructose corn syrup.  Try using natural ketchup or try making  your own.  If you love ketchup just be sure to use small amounts because of the high sugar.  Another healthy alternative would be to add a slice of tomato in place of ketchup.

Barbeque sauce--This is just as bad if not worse than ketchup.  BBQ sauce also contains added sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

Salad dressings--Most store brands contain high fructose corn syrup and unhealthy soybean and canola oils.  Most fat free dressings also have a lot of added sugar.  Once again, homemade dressing is best.  I make a simple combination of apple cider vinegar and extra light olive oil that is drizzle over my salad.  I suggest trying different combinations of your favorite spices with some olive oil and vinegar.  Making your own combination is better than store bought.  Below is a recipe I noted from certified nutritionist Mike Geary.

Healthy Homemade Dressing
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 or 2 teaspoons real  maple syrup
add a pinch of onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and shake all well.
I also add some coconut oil as a twist.

Now you know a little about the best and the worst condiments.   Keep these all in mind when you are preparing your salads, sandwiches, and burgers.  Try to include more of the healthy condiments and limit those with high sugar.  It is also fun and healthier to try creating your own dressings.
