I am in Pennsylvania visiting my family. Today I went in search of organic milk however I was not able to locate any in the local Walmart. This was surprising to me for I thought all the Walmart stores would have organic milk. They did have the organic lettuce and avocados. The farm stands are not open and therefore the only produce available is from the grocery store. My parents have a large garden and can all of their vegetables. They also raise their own beef cows, pigs, and chickens. It is wonderful to have fresh eggs in the morning. There is also homemade bread and other goodies. I limit these in my eating plan however I believe the more things we make from scratch the better it is for us. Homemade is the way to go for then you know what you are eating and can control the ingredients.
When thinking about all the good food here on the farm I realize the importance of a healthy diet and portion size. Many of our weight issues in America stem from over eating and not paying attention to portions. Many people could see a reduction in their weight by just cutting back on the amount of food they are eating. My twin nephews are 17 and have been working hard on portion control and better eating habits. I was glad to hear that and told them about my blog and how I was striving to change my eating to healthier choices. This can be difficult for young people with all the fast food choices and large portions available. Young children and teens need to have more healthier choices and learn how to choose foods that are better for them. When children start out eating healthy they will continue into adulthood.
I am enjoying my time here on the farm and showing my youngest daughter all the farm animals and places of my childhood. Many stores and landmarks have gone and new ones have been built in their place. It is still always a wonderful time to visit my parents and place where I grew up.
I have a few new recipes that I will be sharing in my recipes pages when I return home so be watching for them. These will be country recipes with a healthy twist.
